In a 1987 interview, Dulcie Kelly
nee Birrell (daughter of the lighthouse keeper Oliver Birrell during 1918-31)
recalls the light failing as the Bombala sailed from Brisbane during a cyclone around 1921. Oliver Birrell was able to ring some local people and they went up the lighthouse with about nine lanterns. The ship was able to see the light and successfully made the turn from the North West Channel
